Gigabit Strategy

The Gigabit Strategy is a law passed by the Federal Government of Germany and lays down framework conditions for fiber optic and mobile network expansion. The gigabit strategy is to ensure a nationwide fibre-optic supply in Germany by the end of 2030. The aim of the gigabit strategy is to ensure a modern, digital infrastructure in Germany in order to successfully advance digitization in our society. To do this, the backlog of gigabit expansion in Germany in recent years must be made up and a seamless gigabit supply must be offered where people live, work or travel. To this end, the gigabit strategy also provides for the mobile communications standard to be brought to the highest level. Mobile phone gaps should be closed and 5G should be advanced.

Gigabit Strategy Milestone 2025

The federal government has set itself a milestone for 2025 for the successful implementation of the gigabit strategy. By the end of 2025, every second household and every second commercial space should be connected to fiber optics. The federal government has earmarked 50 billion euros for the milestone.

Central contents of the Gigabit strategy:

With these conditions, fiber optic expansion should be made faster and more efficient:

  • Reducing bureaucracy: speeding up and simplifying approval procedures, e.g. via digital portals
  • Promoting the use of modern and alternative installation techniques to overcome tight civil engineering capacities
  • Establishment of a federal-state secretary committee to discuss development and progress with the federal states
  • Establishment of a new gigabit land register, for a simple overview of current supply and all future projects
